Buisness Model
As air transport industry is booming, airports are becoming bigger and bigger. This has as a result a significant increase in power consumption both in terminals and electrical equipment (lightning, aircrafts, vehicles, luggage belts..) and at the same time environmental burden of the surrounding due to the aircrafts taxiing, landing and taking off. Our System gives a solution to both problems.
Green Wings is selling a wind mills and a filtration system to airports. A tailored made windmills system will use the otherwise lost exhaust gases of airplanes during the waiting time at the beginning of the runway to produce electricity and at the same time will gather a great percentage of those harmful gases in the underground filtration system.
Innovation: The suggested technology is new. The type of windmill already exists and is used in the production of electricity from wind stream coming from random directions. It is also used on board of vessel to produce desalinated sea water. Other parts of the system also exist like the high speed generators – a must in our case- the storage batteries and the filtration chambers.
We are using the kinetic energy from the aircrafts engines exhaust gases during the wait time at the beginning of the runway. This
energy is wasted. These gases now are dispersed in the surrounding of airports polluting the air. In some cases airports are using concrete walls to divert these gases to the upper atmosphere and by doing this they manage to decrease the pollution by 50%. ( but they increase the pollution at higher levels of the atmosphere).
Competition is using small wind mills installed on the roof of the terminals ( with small production of electricity ) or the used of solar energy- like Denver airport- authorities are using solar panels to produce electricity. This method is successful but it requests a large investment, plots of land big as 8 football fields.
Our target is the medium and large airports which have “dedicated” takeoff runways and a big number of take-offs per day, in order to take full advantage of the almost continuous electricity production.
Electricity bills of airports are more than 10% of their running expenses. For example Manchester Airport consumes 1000000MWh per year and they pay an amount of 9 million euro annually. At the same time 50.000 tones of CO2 are dispersed from aircrafts only during the take off stage.
Green Wings System could produce 60-80% of their electricity needs with a smaller cost of 3 cents per kWh and decrease the CO2 emissions.
Revenue model: Electricity cost varies between EU countries. In UK for example, airports electricity cost (UK grid) is around 9 cents per kWh (in USA cost is between 6-13 kWh. Our estimated cost is 3 cent per kWh for a period of 10 years (Initial investment for Equipment EUR 10m, annual maintenance EUR 1m)
Our revenue consists of the profit of the sale of the system and the annual maintenance fees (10% of the initial cost).
